Mold Damaged Photo Repair & Stain Removal Photo Restoration Service
Those Dark Spots on Your Photo Are Not the End.
You open an old box. You pull out a photograph. And it's covered in dark spots, brown marks, or a fuzzy film that shouldn't be there.
Mold on your photo. Stains. Yellowing. Damage from years stored in a damp place.
It looks bad. But it doesn't mean the photograph is ruined.
I'm Jeremy Blum at Bay Area Photo Restoration in Vallejo, California. Since 2018, I've repaired mold-damaged and stained photographs for families across California and the US. I do this work by hand — no automated tools, no quick filters. Just careful, precise work on every photo.
What Mold and Stain Damage Looks Like on Photographs
Mold and stain damage on photographs show up in different ways. Here's what to look for:
Dark brown or black spots spread across the photo surface
A white or gray fuzzy film growing on the photograph (this is mold)
Yellow or orange staining from age and humidity in storage
Brown ring-shaped marks from moisture sitting on the photo
Uneven discoloration covering faces or key parts of the image
A musty smell coming from the photo or album
Spots that look like the photograph is breaking down from the inside
Photographs stored in basements, attics, or humid closets get this kind of damage the most. The good news — most mold and stain damage on photos can be removed digitally, even when it looks severe.
How I Repair Mold-Damaged and Stained Photographs
Each damaged photograph gets looked at carefully before any work starts. Here's the full process:
Step 1 — Send Me Your Photo Take a clear phone photo of the damaged photograph or scan it. Upload it through our contact page. It's free and takes just a minute.
Step 2 — Free Quote in 24 Hours I look at the mold or stain damage on your photograph and give you a clear quote. I tell you what I can fix and what I can't. No pressure.
Step 3 — High-Resolution Scan I scan your photograph at high resolution to capture all the detail — including the areas under and around the mold spots and stains.
Step 4 — Mold Spot and Stain Removal I remove mold spots, brown marks, and discoloration from your photograph by hand using professional editing tools. I work carefully around the image so the photo underneath stays intact.
Step 5 — Color and Tone Correction After the mold and stain damage is removed, I fix the color of the photograph. Moisture and mold often shift the tones of a photo. I bring them back to what they should look like.
Step 6 — Full Photograph Cleanup I check the whole photograph for any leftover marks, uneven areas, or damage I haven't fixed yet. Nothing gets missed.
Step 7 — You Review It First I send you a preview before the job is done. If anything needs to change, I change it. You pay only when you're happy with your restored photograph.

Common Questions About Mold Damaged Photo Repair
Can heavy mold damage on a photograph be fully repaired?
1
In many cases, yes. If the image under the mold is still visible on your photograph, I can remove the damage and restore what's there. Very severe mold that has eaten through the photo surface may limit what's possible. I'll always tell you honestly what I can do before I start.
Is it safe to handle a photograph that has mold on it?
2
Be careful with mold-damaged photos. If the mold looks active or the photograph smells strongly, keep it in a sealed bag until you're ready to scan it or send it in. Avoid touching your face after handling a moldy photo.
Do I need to mail my original photograph?
3
Not always. A clear phone photo or scan of the damaged photograph works well for most mold and stain repair jobs. For very detailed restoration work, mailing the original gives the best result. I'll guide you on what's best for your specific photo.
Will the mold come back after the photograph is repaired?
4
The digital file you receive will be completely clean — no mold, no stains. But your original physical photograph still has the damage on it. To protect the original, store it in a cool, dry place in an acid-free sleeve after scanning.
How long does mold damaged photo repair take?
5
Most mold and stain repair jobs on photographs finish in 5 to 10 business days. Rush service is available in 2 to 3 business days if you need it sooner.
Yes. I work with clients all over the US. You can upload your damaged photograph through our contact page or mail the original. I return it safely.
